Jurying
work for this exhibition was challenging, both because of
the difficulty inherent in evaluating three-dimensional, interactive
works via digital images and because so many entries lacked
clarity in one of 2 main areas: 1) what idea was the maker
concerning themselves with and 2) why did the maker choose
this format over another to present their idea.
Bookworks (books made as artworks, or artworks made from books,
or interactive objects that are booklike) utilize many of
the same elements as other types of work (images, words, physical
materials) but require evaluation of a different sort than
other works of art. Bookworks offer numerous levels of engagement;
consequently there are many levels of potential success or
failure, such as the quality and presentation of the writing
and/or imagery, the chosen structure and materials’
contribution to the idea or project, the level of craft complementing
or distracting from the project and so on. The pieces chosen
for this exhibit do not completely fail at any one level.
Conversely, few of those accepted succeed at every level.
Specifically,
I evaluated the quality of content, craftsmanship, the choices
made as to materials, structure, presentation and the interest
and originality of the work. Many of the entries were, in
Johanna Drucker’s words “clearly useful or meaningful
to the person who made them, but that isn’t enough.”*
Several entries appeared to be the not very interesting result
of a few hours spent at a weekend workshop rather than the
result of a well-defined, developed and executed idea. Many
of the rejected entries can more easily be seen as ideas with
merit that need further development and more attention to
detail than finished bookworks.
